The Process of Asbestos Analysis: From Sample Collection to Results

Demystifying Asbestos Analysis: Understanding the Process

Asbestos analysis is a critical step in assessing and managing asbestos hazards. In this blog post, we will demystify the process, from sample collection to receiving results, shedding light on the steps involved and the importance of each stage.

Step 1: Sample Collection
The process begins with the collection of samples suspected to contain asbestos. These samples can come from various sources, including building materials, dust and debris, and soil. Proper full depth sample collection of sufficient size is crucial to obtaining accurate results.

Step 2: Sample Preparation
Collected samples undergo preparation to extract and isolate asbestos fibres. This step involves inspection under a stereo microscope to isolate suspect fibres, and may also include additional processes, including pulverisation, heating or a solvent soak to isolate fibres from the surrounding matrix to allow isolation of asbestos fibre for analysis.

Step 3: Microscopic Analysis
The isolated fibre is then mounted in specific refractive index liquids and examined using high-powered polarised light microscope. In order for the fibre to be classified as a specific asbestos type, trained analysts observe the optical properties of the fibre under various lighting conditions and make a determination of the fibre type. This step is crucial in confirming the presence of asbestos.

Step 4: Where Results are not Conclusive
Occasionally, a conclusive result cannot be obtained.  This may be due to the matrix obscuring the fine fibres, or it may be a fibre type which does not confirm to the optical properties required for a positive asbestos analysis. We will indicate this on the report and, if you require, can forward the samples for additional analysis.

Step 5: Reporting
Once analysis is complete, a detailed report is generated. This report includes information provided by the client regarding the location the sample was obtained, the sample size, whether sample contains asbestos and the specific asbestos type present.  The report serves as a valuable resource for decision-making and managing asbestos-containing materials.
